║ 2. Welcome to AWEMP/32! ║
╙───────────────────────────╨──────────────────────────────────────────────────
Welcome to AWEMP/32! You've probably waited a rather long time for a
new release since the v1.45 release. I've been able to add dozens of
names to my ever growing supporters list, big thanks guys! There were
also people who thought AWEMP was dead, well.. they were wrong. Here is
a brand new release of the ultimate module player for the Sound Blaster
32 (PnP) and Sound Blaster AWE32 (PnP) soundcards!
╓──────────────────╖
║ 3. Disclaimer. ║
╙──────────────────╨───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
I wonder if it's ever possible to do harm to anyone (a computer?) with
this program, but who knows, so here it goes:
"The author (=me) cannot be held liable for damage and/or loss of data
caused by use of this program, nor for possible deafness or blown
speakers caused by the volume being turned up too high."
Hope this is clear enough . . .
╓──────────────────────────╖
║ 4. Distribution rules. ║
╙──────────────────────────╨───────────────────────────────────────────────────
This program is released as freeware! That means no one has to pay a
penny for use of this program. Distribution of AWEMP on CD-ROMs,
PD-disks, etc is only allowed with permission of the author. Contact
address can be found at the end of this documentation file. If you
put this on a CD-ROM I would like to receive a copy (if possible).
I encourage everyone to distribute this program as much as possible!
Place it on your local BBS, upload it to ftp-sites or put it on your
www-site, just make sure everyone can make use of this great player.
Although I like to receive postcards (by means of cardware), you're
not obliged to sent me one. As was with previous releases of AWEMP,
everyone who sends me a postcard, snail-mail or just e-mail will be
mentioned in the "unofficial" supporters list.

║ 5. Files in this package. ║
╙─────────────────────────────╨────────────────────────────────────────────────
A lot of files in the AWEMP/32 v1.50 package this time. Main files are
the AWEMP and DOS4GW executables. Here's a list of the files in this
package with a short description:
AWEMP.EXE Main executable.
DOS4GW.EXE Protected mode memory manager used by AWEMP/32.
IMPORTFX.EXE Additional program to add new FX algorithms.
AWEMP.FX Database containing the FX algorithms.
AWEMP.INI Preferences file.
AWEMP.PIF File used by Windows 3.1/3.11 and Windows 95.
AWEMP.DOC The file you're reading at the moment.
AWEMP.Q&A Commonly asked questions and their answers.
AWEMP.REV Revision history of the AWEMP project.
FEATURES.TXT AWEMP/32 v1.50 features.....
DISTSITE.LST List of all distribution sites.
SUPPORT.ERS Comprehensive list of names of loyal AWEMP users.
FREEDOM.LST Sample playlist file.
EMUPROG.TXT Info about available programming info of the EMU8000.
Check out AWEMP.Q&A if you're having problems running AWEMP. If you
want to know what AWEMP features, see the file FEATURES.TXT.
When you send me some feedback you can expect to see your name in
the file SUPPORT.ERS. Etc, etc.....
╓───────────────────────────╖
║ 6. Commandline options. ║
╙───────────────────────────╨──────────────────────────────────────────────────
Note that not a single commandline option has to be passed to AWEMP.
There are default values for each setting which can be edited in the
preferences file (AWEMP.INI) or within the player.
When there's no module or playlist file specified at the commandline,
AWEMP starts up with the file selector. Here you can pick a file you
wish to play (see section 9: the file selector).
All commandline options listed below override the default values!
Valid values are mentioned between brackes [/].
/A[-] Advanced Memory Management System (tm).
/Cxxx Chorus level [0-256]
/ECxxx Chorus FX ## in effect list
/ERxxx Reverb FX ## in effect list
/H Help on commandline options and general usage
/Lx[-] Repeat mode [0-2, 0: no repeat, 1: repeat, 2: repeat plst]
/M[-] Mono playback
/O[-] Shuffle playlist (random)
/Rxxx Reverb level [0-256]
/Uxxx EMU8000 subsystem baseport [620-680]
/X[-] Exit player at end-of-playlist
Options may also be preceded with a '-' instead of the slash character.
The '-' character after an options disables that setting.

║ 7. Overview. ║
╙────────────────╨─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
At first sight you will notice some changes in the screen layout. First
there's the 80x50 mode, second is window bordering and the pseudo-3d
buttons. I decided to throw away the old layout and draw a new one,
however some people didn't like my draft, so I took the old interface
again and improved it. I hope you all like it.
AWEMP/32 v1.50 has become a stand-alone application. You can now select
modules from the file selector, move them to the play-list or create a
new playlist from scratch. Everything can be configured the way you
want it. All major module formats are supported, including the new IT
format! Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 users now finally have continuously
playback, even in the background.
╓───────────────────────╖
║ 8. The main screen. ║
╙───────────────────────╨──────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Following keys are available in every screen (not just the main
screen):
ESC The forbidden key :) Normally, with this key you can
close all opened windows, however when there are no
opened windows the player stops and exits to DOS.
ENTER,N/B With the N+B keys you can play the next cq. previous
module in the playlist. The ENTER key has the same
function as the N key. If the playlist is empty
you'll go to the file selector immediately.
F4,A Sample 'n instrument info. Instrument info is only
available in XMs and ITs.
C Pop up the preferences window, here you can change
several options concerning module playback and
playlist control.
D You like DOS? Then this is the key for you.... Btw,
playing will not stop (what a pity, isn't it? :)
You're tired of DOS? Then type EXIT at the prompt
and you'll be back in the player within notime.
E Enter the magic FX selector. Here you can select and
try out reverb and chorus effects to your liking.
F Walk in the file selector right away. You're probably
already familiar with file selectors like this one
so I'm not goin' to tell you how to use it.... :)
G Uhm.. this key does nothing, no really.
F1,H "What was that ESC key good for?" When you ask yourself
questions like this one, it is the right time to press
the F1 or H key.
L Enter the playlist. You can create and edit the
playlist in the file selector window.
O Toggle stereo/mono playback. Very handy when you're
listening to MODs with headphones put on.
P Pause/unpause song playing. Current playing status
is shown in the second window from top, ie. the
symbols you'll often find on CD players.
Q You want more bass? Then this key will pop up the
equalizer control, here you can change the overall
sound the way you want it....
T Toggle elapsed/remaining time display. The remaining
timer can display wrong times, this is due to the
way I calculate it, ie. the time is affected by the
speed and bpm values.
F5-F8 User defined keys. Default the keys are defined as
follows: F5+F6 = [+] and F7+F8 = {+}, ie. with
F5+F6 you can control the reverb level and with
F7+F8 the chorus level.
CTRL-F2 Save current settings. Yes, it saves everything that
can be adjusted in the current window. Btw, settings
are saved to the file AWEMP.INI.
[/]+{/} Adjust reverb or chorus level. Current levels are
shown in the second window from bottom.
-/+ Adjust global volume. This does not affect the MIDI
volume anymore (as it did in previous versions).
Current global volume is shown in the second window
from top.
Following keys are only available in a shell-to-DOS session:
F11 Pause/unpause playing, also resets playing speed if
it was changed by some program.
F12 Stop playing, resets song playing position to 0.
SHIFT-F11 Decrease/increase global volume.
SHIFT-F12
CTRL-F11 Decrease/increase song playing position.
CTRL-F12
Following keys are only available in the main screen:
1-0,M Mute/unmute channel. Keys 1-0 refer to channels 1 to 10.
S Solo/unsolo channel, quite obvious meaning I would say
so.
/ Decrease/increase song playing position.
CTRL-/ Decrease/increase beats per minute rate. Btw, the bpm
rate can be locked in the preferences window.
CTRL-/ Decrease/increase speed rate.
╓─────────────────────────╖
║ 9. The file selector. ║
╙─────────────────────────╨────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Keys available in the file selector:
TAB Switches from the file selector on the left to
the playlist on the right (of the screen).
F2 Reread directory or archive. Good thing to do when
the directory structure has been changed while you
were in a OS-shell session.
ALT-S Toggle sort files on/off. When this option is turned
on files will be sorted on alphabetical order.
ALT-Q,F9 Toggle quick scan on/off. Quick scan means that the
files will not be scanned internally for titles,
number of channels and file sizes.
ALT-A Toggle show all files on/off. With this option turned
on all files will be shown instead of the files with
extensions defined in AWEMP.INI.
ALT-I Toggle quick search feature on/off. With this option
turned on you can search for modules very quicky:
just type the first two or three characters of a
filename and the file selector automatically searches
for the closest match.
INS/DEL Insert or delete a file to/from the playlist. The
/ playlist is shown on the very right of the screen btw.
CTRL-/ Move a playlist entry up/down in the playlist.
Available only when you're in the playlist editor!
CTRL-/ Add all files from the file selector to the playlist
or remove all entries from the playlist.
╓──────────────────────────────────╖
║ 10. Sample 'n instrument info. ║
╙──────────────────────────────────╨───────────────────────────────────────────
Keys available in the sample and instrument info window:
TAB Switch between sample/instrument info. Instrument info
is only available in XMs and ITs.
... No more special keys here, sorry.
As in the file selector all common keys are ofcourse available too.
╓─────────────────────╖
║ 11. Future plans. ║
╙─────────────────────╨────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Well.. what's in store for you? Here are a few things you can expect
in future releases of AWEMP/32:
■ Emu8000 control center, allows you to manually adjust registers
and gives you control of all hardware lfo's, envelopes and the
digital equalizer.
■ Integrated FX editor, no separate programs like IMPORTFX.EXE.
■ Maybe a seperate version for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 users,
with a delicious graphical interface :)
If you do happen to have a truly brilliant idea of something which
should be in the next release of AWEMP/32, don't hesitate to share
it with me!
╓──────────────────╖
